The 11 countries of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) have agreed to back a North American bid to host the World Cup in 2026.

Canada, Mexico and the United States recently announced a desire to host the tournament, which will consist of 48 teams following recent expansion.

"These three nations have the appropriate infrastructure in place to host the enlarged 48-team, 80-match event," OFC president David Chung said.

"In addition, CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) has not hosted the world's premier football tournament since 1994, so it makes sense on a rotational basis that the World Cup returns to the Confederation."

The OFC has called on FIFA to endorse an exclusive negotiation period with the Canada, Mexico and US bid which it can do at the next congress in May.

The 2018 and 2022 World Cups, consisting of 32 nations, will take place in Russia and Qatar.

FIFA rules bar European and Asian nations bidding to host the 2026 tournament at this stage, meaning the US led bid is unlikely to face realistic competition for the event.
