Livid Manchester United fans have threatened to kill the referee who had given a red card to United mid-fielder Nani during the club's controversial Champions League exit after defeat by Spanish side Real Madrid.
Turkish official Cuneyt Cakir red-carded the winger over a 'high challenge' as the Red Devils slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Real Madrid, the Sun reports.
Venting their ire on Facebook and Twitter, many United fans have sent death threats to the referee, talking about stoning him to death and murdering his family.
More than 2,000 people 'liked' a Facebook page called "F*** you Cuneyt Cakir', on which was posted: 'I am gonna take a plane tomorrow and find that d******d," before asking his address.'
Twitter was also full of similar threats to the referee, including posts like 'The united army are coming to attack your receding hairline you daft p****' and 'I actually want the blood of that Turkish referee.'
In a more restrained manner, some fans called for the punishment of the 'erring' referee by the UEFA and said that he should stay away from football for a while.
However, police has warned the fans over sending internet death threats and issued a statement that sending malicious messages on social networking sites is a criminal offence. (ANI)
