Sami Khedira will not renew his Real Madrid contract and leave the Spanish club in summer, the Germany midfielder has said.

Khedira told Thursday's edition of Kicker sports magazine that he is going through a season to forget but that his decision is not directed against Real but rather to seek a new challenge.

The 27-year-old joined Real in 2010 from VfB Stuttgart but has featured in only 17 games this season, 10 of them as a starter, after being sidelined for almost half of 2014 with a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.

"I am sad and angry about this season. It is not satisfactory considering my ambitions, and I am the one who is most upset about it," Khedira told Kicker.

"It is not a decision against Real but I want a new challenge in my career and develop as a player ... I had a great time in a great team."

Khedira, who captained Germany in Wednesday's 2-2 friendly draw with Australia, said he won't rush to a decision on his next club.

Schalke have confirmed their interest and Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg are also reportedly considering signing him. Clubs from Italy and England - including Chelsea with manager Jose Mourinho under whom Khedira played at Real 2010-2013 - are also allegedly interested.

"The name of the club and the bank account balance are not relevant for me but rather the plan for the next years. I want to help shape (a team) and lead young players," he said.
