Pep Guardiola has said he would love to have Julian Alvarez back at Manchester City after the Argentine striker’s impressive performances with Atlético Madrid this season.
The 24-year-old forward left City in search of more playing time. He has thrived under Diego Simeone, quickly becoming a key player in La Liga and the Champions League.
“He Wanted to Play More; I Understand”
During his pre-match press conference on Friday, Guardiola discussed Alvarez’s time at City and his tough choice to leave.
“During our Treble-winning season, do you remember the players who had to sit on the bench?” Guardiola said. “Aymeric Laporte, a top centre-back and a regular for his national team, and Julian Alvarez, among others. They all wanted to play more, and I understand that.”
Guardiola added, “Julian had to compete with Erling Haaland, which was fantastic for us. Now he’s at one of the best clubs in the world, with a world-class coach and teammates, and he’s doing really well.”
He ended with a smile, saying, “Of course, I’d love to have him with me now, but I understand.”
Thriving Under Simeone
Since joining Atletico Madrid, Alvarez has regained his sharpness and confidence, providing goals and assists in important matches. His relentless work rate and tactical smarts have earned him the trust of Simeone and the admiration of fans.
Many observers in Spain believe Alvarez could become Atletico’s next great striker, following in the footsteps of legends like Luis Suarez and Diego Costa. Meanwhile, some City fans regret his departure, calling him one of the most complete forwards the club has produced in recent years.
