The Elephants booked their place in the final thanks to a 3-1 win over DRC in their semi-final clash on Wednesday in Bata.

It is the second time since 2012 that the 1992 winners have reached the final and Frenchman Renard says "the most important is to reach the final" despite the difficult conditions under which the feat was achieved against a tough Congolese side.

"In the second half we played well because DR Congo were tired.

"Yaya Toure played very well and did a lot of sacrifices for the team," said Renard.

Captain Yaya Toure broke the deadlock on 20 minutes before the Leopards rallied back through Dieudonne Mbokani three minutes later.

Gervinho restored the Ivorians just before half time before Serge Konan sealed victory from a goalmouth action in the second half.

After guiding Zambia to the ultimate in 2012, history is staring in the face of Renard, with the prospect of becoming the first coach to win the flagship African football title with two different countries.

The Ivorians have failed to live-up to their pre-tournament favourites' tag since 2006 and the 46-year old is hoping to guide them to the 'promise land'.

"We will try to take the trophy to Abidjan," the Frenchman said.

Ghana coach Avram Grant is also reveling in his team reaching the final of the African Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars saw off hosts Equatorial Guinea 3-0 in the semis meeting on Thursday night in Malabo courtesy goals from Jordan Ayew, Mubarak Wakaso and Andre Ayew to set a final date with western neighbours, Cote d'Ivoire on Sunday in Bata.

It is the second time since 2010 that the four-time winners have reached the final after making the last four on their four previous attempts, and Grant is on cloud nine to have played a huge role in the Black Stars reaching the last two.

Grant, who was named Ghana coach last November, is on course to guide the black Stars to break their Africa Cup of Nations trophy hoodoo.

They are yet to lay their hands on the continental title since 1982.

"It is good to be in the final especially with Ghana. Before the tournament, nobody gave us a chance.

"Everyone talked about the other teams. Now we are in the final and we would want to win the cup," Grant said.

Ghana will face old foes Cote d'Ivoire in a repeat of the 1992 final which the Ivorians triumphed after a marathon penalty shoot-out, 11-10 in what was the first time every player had taken part in the penalty shoot-out in the final of a major championship. A brace from brothers Jordan and Andrew Ayew and a record 1 500th tournament goal by Mubarak Wakaso ushered Ghana into the final.

Play was halted eight minutes from time in this African Cup of Nations semi-final as missiles were thrown on the pitch by some disgruntled home supporters.

At one end of the ground, Ghana fans came off the terraces to seek shelter behind one of the goals after objects were hurled at them by rival supporters.

Wakaso's goal, his side's second goal against the hosts goes into the history books as the player to have achieved that historic feat.

Former Nigeria midfielder, Austin "Jay Jay" Okocha it will be recalled scored the 1 000th goal of the African Cup of Nations at the 2004 edition during the group phase meeting with South Africa on January 31, 2004 at the Mustapha Ben Jannet Stadium in Monastir.

Okocha scored the second goal in the 4-0 win against Bafana Bafana.

Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu is not a celebrating yet.

Atsu was named man-of-the-match as the Black Stars eased past hosts Equatorial Guinea in their semi-final meeting on Thursday night in Malabo.

"We worked harder than them (Equatorial Guinea). They were very physical but we told each other we had to concentrate on the game. We were talking to each other and just wanted to win the game. This is not the time to celebrate. We have to focus on the next game," said the 23-year old, also in reckoning for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament prize.

On the clash against Cote d'Ivoire, the Everton winger said:

"They are the favourites and have a strong team. We are going there to celebrate," noted Atsu, who was only 16-days old when Ghana lost out to the Ivorians in the 1992 final.

The midfielder was a member of the Ghana squad that finished fourth at the 2013 edition in South Africa.
