Novak Djokovic held off a late charge from crowd favourite Roger Federer as the Serb won the US Open final 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to claim his 10th grand slam title

Djokovic and his Swiss rival had to wait out a rain delay of three hours before they could take to the court for the final edition in New York.

Djokovic reached the finals of all four majors this year, winning three of them - in Australia, Wimbledon and New York.

Federer, winner of the record 17 grand slam singles titles, was denied his first since 2012 as the Swiss lost his first sets of the championship.

Federer fought back in the fourth set from a 5-2 hole, breaking Djokovic as the Serb served for the victory, before finally going down after more than three hours.
