Barcelona remains focused on renewing Frenkie de Jong’s contract but is looking to implement significant changes to his salary structure due to the club’s financial situation.

According to SPORT, Barcelona wants to secure the Dutch midfielder’s future while adapting his contract to their revised financial policies.

Salary Adjustments Without Reducing Total Earnings

De Jong currently earns €19 million per season, with his contract set to expire in 2026. Under Hansi Flick, he has been a key player, making his renewal a top priority for the club.

The new offer does not reduce his overall earnings but proposes restructuring how he is paid. Instead of a high fixed salary, De Jong would receive a lower guaranteed wage, with performance-related bonuses covering the difference.

Eliminating Deferred Payments and Adding a Key Release Clause

A major aspect of the proposed deal is removing deferred payments, which were agreed upon under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu during the pandemic. Barcelona aims to eliminate these financial obligations to ease future expenses.

Additionally, the new contract includes an €80 million release clause. Given De Jong’s current level of performance, this amount remains feasible for top European clubs if he ever decides to leave.

Awaiting De Jong’s Decision

So far, De Jong has not officially responded to the offer, but negotiations are ongoing. At 27, this could be his last chance to secure a long-term contract with strong financial terms, making the discussions crucial for both sides.

Barcelona is now waiting for De Jong’s decision, as his contract renewal could shape the club’s midfield for years to come.
