Cristiano Ronaldo has made it clear—he plans to celebrate in front of Denmark’s Rasmus Højlund during Sunday’s decisive UEFA Nations League clash.

Højlund Ignites the Rivalry with ‘SIU’ Celebration

Portugal heads into the second leg trailing 1-0 after Højlund’s late winner on Thursday. The Manchester United striker came off the bench in the 78th minute to score, then added fuel to the fire by performing Ronaldo’s iconic ‘SIU’ celebration right in front of him.

However, the young Danish forward later clarified that his gesture was not meant as disrespect but rather as a tribute to his football idol.

Højlund: “Ronaldo Is My Football Inspiration”

Speaking to Danish media, Højlund expressed his deep admiration for Ronaldo: "I won’t exaggerate, but Cristiano means everything to me. I fell in love with football because of him, became a Manchester United fan because of him. I even started training alone, doing push-ups and sit-ups every night before bed, all because I wanted to be like Cristiano."

He further told TV2: "The celebration wasn’t mockery—it was for my idol. He has played a huge role in my football journey. Scoring against him and Portugal felt surreal, but my respect for him remains immense."

Ronaldo’s Response: “Celebrating in Front of Him Would Be Fun”

Ahead of the return leg at Sporting Lisbon’s home stadium, Ronaldo addressed Højlund’s antics, making it clear he holds no grudges.

"I have no problem with it," said the Portugal captain. "I know he didn’t mean any disrespect. Many players around the world copy my celebration—it’s an honor. Hopefully, I’ll get to do it in front of him tomorrow. That would be fun. I’m glad he likes my celebration."

Ronaldo Aims to Settle It on the Pitch

Although Ronaldo didn’t find the net in the first leg, he played a key role in keeping the deficit at just 1-0. Cameras caught him speaking to Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa moments before he saved Christian Eriksen’s penalty, sparking speculation that Ronaldo had provided insight into his former Manchester United teammate’s penalty-taking tendencies.

Now, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is determined to be more clinical in front of goal, as he looks to inspire Portugal to overturn the deficit and push for their second Nations League title.
