Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim clears the bar during the men’s high jump event at the IAAF Diamond League Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, yesterday.

Barshim, who had won in the Doha leg of the IAAF Diamond League series earlier this month, won with a 2.36m effort.

Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim easily won the high jump at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Eugene, USA with a best leap of 2.36m yesterday.

Russian Danil Lysenko, taking part as an Authorised Neutral Athlete (ANA), was second with a jump of 2.32m, while Yu Wang of China was third, also with 2.32m.

Yesterday’s success was the world champion Qatari’s second straight win in the prestigious Diamond League series this season, following his victory in Doha earlier in May where he had jumped 2.40m.

Barshim went unbeaten in the Diamond League last year and will be aiming to repeat the feat this year too.

The Qatari is also widely tipped to break Cuban Xavier Sotomayor’s record of 2.45m set 25 years ago.
