Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has called up 17-year-old defender Mario Rivas to the first-team squad for the upcoming clash against Leganes. This decision comes amid a defensive crisis, with key players Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Éder Militão all sidelined due to injuries.

Who is Mario Rivas?

Rivas is one of Real Madrid’s most promising young defenders, excelling as a center-back over the past season and a half. His composure under pressure and defensive solidity have made him one of the standout talents at the club’s Valdebebas training facility.

According to AS, Rivas has been a regular starter for Castilla since late October, featuring in 13 consecutive matches. He has formed a strong defensive partnership with Jacobo Ramón, whose style has been compared to Virgil van Dijk.

This season has been a breakout year for Rivas, as he has featured across four different teams:

Juvenil A in the UEFA Youth League
Real Madrid C in Segunda RFEF
Castilla in Primera RFEF

Now, he is on the verge of making his senior debut in the Copa del Rey.
Adding to his growing reputation, Rivas also represented Spain’s U-18 team in a match against Italy three weeks ago.

A Promising Path to Stardom

Following in his father’s footsteps, Rivas began his football journey at Betera in Valencia before moving to Getafe, the club his father passionately supported.

Under the guidance of Raúl González, Rivas has adapted well to a three-man defensive system, excelling in covering wide areas. His ability to read the game and anticipate plays without relying solely on physicality sets him apart. While he still has room for physical development, his positional awareness and tactical intelligence make him a highly-rated prospect at Valdebebas.

With Ancelotti keen on integrating the next generation of defenders, Rivas now has the opportunity to prove himself at the highest level. As he steps onto the senior stage, the football world will be watching—is Mario Rivas the future of Real Madrid’s defense?
