Meet 10 models moving "MidEast looks" mainstream

Published September 4th, 2015 - 07:05 GMT

Middle East fashion designers have been coming on scene with the force and speed of Arabian throughbreds, conquering Paris, Milan, New York, and Dubai. Consider top designers like Lebanese Zuhair Murad (who dresses Taylor Swift), Jordanian-Brit Hasan Hejazi (whose frocks grace Paloma Faith), and Madiyah Al Sharqi, who is truly fashion royalty (her dad is the Ruler of Fujairah!). And those other Emiratis; the three gorgeous Golkar brothers, Babak, Haman and Farhan (they founded the label Emperor 1688 in 2007). So where are the Middle Eastern mannequins to help sell their designs?

It follows that the models hawking cosmetics and couture would also represent our region, putting a fresh face (and toned torso) on what has been a staunchly West-centric industry. The Middle East hasn't traditionally been the place to search for a supermodel, mostly due to a conservative culture that rejects exploitation of physical form. But that's changing. Quickly.

Yet pinpointing a singular "Middle Eastern" look is as ridiculous as identifying one perfect European, or North American face. Our region is a melting pot of races and ethnicities, creating a genetic soup that produces some spectacularly beautiful peopleSo let’s cut to the chase and look at some of the Middle East’s finest models. In no particular order, here's some gorgeous eye candy to help kickstart your weekend.

Morocco's Hind Sahli prowls catwalks for Vera Wang and Hervé Léger. She featured in EU editions of Vogue in adverts for Top Shop, Benetton and Armani, and scored a deal with Estée Lauder for a cosmetic campaign for the Middle Eastern market. She would ultimately like to move into fashion design. (William Lords)

Iraqi-American Alexander Uloom has modelled for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. In 2010, he made the cut for the Official Top 100 Sexiest Arab Men by Fanoos Entertainment. Now a fixture on the New York fashion circuit, last month he worked the catwalk for Giorgio Armani couture. He also wants to act.

Tunisian Hanaa Ben Abdesslem is perhaps the most successful of our model round-up. Discovered in 2009 on a reality TV show for models in Lebanon, she's walked runways for Vivienne Westwood, Givenchy and Ralph Lauren. In 2013, she was the first Arab model to feature in the Pirelli Calendar, and she's the face of French cosmetics house Lancôme.

Moroccan Abdel Abdelkader came from humble beginnings, dropping out of school by age 16. Plagued by allergies throughout his lucrative modelling career, he retired from the business and moved to Barcelona where he has reinvented himself as a juicing entrepreneur. Buy a smoothie from this smoothie?

Palestinian model Huda Naccache became the Middle East's first bikini-clad covergirl in 2011 when she appeared on the cover of Arabic magazine Lilac. She juggled modelling with beauty pageants while also studying archaeology at the University of Haifa. Dig that!

German-Turkish actress and model Sila Sahin was the first Muslima to be photographed topless for a magazine. Her family cut her off after she appeared naked in a 2011 German edition of Playboy. She said at the time that the pictures were "'a liberation from the restrictions of my childhood".

Breakdancer and sometimes model Brahim Zaibat may be best known for his romance with Madonna (30 years his senior!). After their 2013 breakup, she slammed him in her tune "Unapologetic B***h", mocking his sexual (and financial) prowess. Zaibat went on to pen a book and star in his own touring dance show. We call that the "Madge Effect".

Bella Hadid is the younger sister of Sports Illustrated model Gigi Hadid, offspring of a Palestinian dad and American mom. This stunner is ironically known for eschewing makeup, nevertheless always looking flawless - maybe not so difficult when your skin is only 18 years old. Rumor has it she'll be joining her big sis as a Victoria Secret "angel".

Udi Karni is a Palestinian model and athlete, specializing in track and field events - seems he placed first in decathalon at the 2008 Israeli nationals. He set down his shot put and took a long jump into modelling for fashion house Emporio Armani and other major brands.
