10 hilarious ways to "talk dirty" in Beirut's waste war!

Published September 1st, 2015 - 03:59 GMT

Lebanon’s “debacle de debris” is getting stinkier by the minute. Protestors have drawn a line in the sand, acting today to oust Minister of Environment Mohammad Machnouk. But there’s another line to consider - a fine one separating tragedy and comedy, which picketers in Beirut's week-long demonstrations have crossed, hoping to keep things calm with comedic antics that communicate their cause.

Trash-gate began on July 17 when locals weary of being “dumped on” shut down the country's largest landfill. Government failure to resolve the dispute resulted in walls of waste along city streets, attracting rats and repelling residents.

Social-media movement Tol3et Re7atkom (a/k/a You Stink) has incited tens of thousands to take to the streets to protest the mounting mess, but the underlying agenda is increasingly political with increased accusations of government corruption.

Earlier today, You Stink protesters began a sit-in at Ministry of Environment, allegedly trapping the Minister inside his office, and promising to stay until he resigns. A handful of picketers are diffusing the potential powderkeg by posing in costumes and carrying placards painted with truly funny slogans.

It’s a clever way to draw attention to the crisis, because isn't comedy just a funny way to be serious?

How do you dress up as "corruption"? Try on an exploding cash machine for size. We can't say why he went with US greenbacks - possible they weigh less than Lebanese 'pounds'? - nor verify whether jewelry is de rigeur for crooked pols, or if it's just this protester's usual 'bling'.

HOLY STEAMING PILES OF GARBAGE, BATMAN! This joker went full 'super-hero' in support of the protests, and his facemask did double duty as a stench-blocker.

The noxious trash fumes make mouth-breathing a demonstration must - necessary for survival but hell on your lipstick! This protester turned a cop's reflective shield into her own personal makeup mirror. Who needs a handbag full of girly gear when you've got riot police around?

The smelly streets of Beirut block the fruity aroma wafting from that hookah, but worse still is the dilemma - dare you open your mouth to inhale on the pipe? This ingenious smoker devised a way to puff in peace. Keep calm and (with DIY nose protection!) sheesha on.

This foursome insists Life's a Beach, even with no waste management services in place. But face masks and snorkles are mandatory gear for demonstrator dumpster-diving.

Nothing says 'I love you' like razor wire and armed guards! A couple takes a surreal selfie while smooching near the sit-in. (Be warned, young lovers - that tiny kid in the background is the result of such behavior.)

Lebanese model-turned-singer Miryam Klink joined the protest with a posse of pink cleaners. Notorious for her provocative wardrobe and overtly sexual dance moves, critics claim she should maybe clean up her act instead.

Dirty dancing reaches new levels when tons of trash set the stage. Just don't drop your partner in the piles, because 'nobody puts Baby in the corner' - especially when it's filled with rotten food.

Diaper-clad demonstrators help remind us as to what's in those trash mountains. It's not just cardboard boxes and plastic water bottles - there's moldy food, medical debris and used baby nappies. The writing on their bums say it all - You Stink!

An unusual 'hen party' for this self-proclaimed 'unique bride' - whose mama probably told her, "Sure it's good he loves you, but he also has to take out the trash!"
