ALBAWABA - Speculations from social media users about who carried out the cyberattack on Musk's X are far from over, as new rumors from OSINT revealed that the person behind the incident was reportedly a young Egyptian university student who has ties to Russia.

A fact-checking report by France's OSINT said that the individual in question is an Egyptian university student from Al Jizah, named Mohamed Hany. According to his LinkedIn page, Mohamed is currently studying as an AI and Machine Learning Engineer at "Brain Hack - KSU."

It's also claimed that he's reportedly pro-Palestine and has ties to Russia as mentioned above.

Was the hacker behind Musk's X cyberattack Egyptian?

Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) suffered an outage on March 10, 2025, preventing users from surfing the platform. A day later, the popular social media platform made a comeback but its users reported several bugs and difficulty in embedding posts.

Elon Musk took to social media and claimed that the "Massive cyberattack" was done by a "large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved." Eyes were set on Dark Storm, a pro-Palestinian hacktivist group known for launching cyberattacks on several entities including NATO-backed countries and Israel.

The group announced taking responsibility for the attack on Telegram while also showcasing screenshots as evidence. Dark Storm wrote, "Twitter has been taken offline by Dark Storm Team." Experts referred to the viral incident as a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, where hackers overwhelm the platform with fake requests till it stops functioning properly.

While some claim that the attack emerged from Ukraine due to recent political tensions between the country and the US, it can be difficult to track hackers' locations through their IP addresses as it has proven to be unreliable, as individuals can mask it or operate on a global scale.
