Protests erupted in Turkey since the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on March 19, who is the main rival to Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Istanbul Mayor was expected to run for the 2028 presidential elections in Turkey.
According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the ongoing protests left 1,133 suspects arrested after participating in illegal activities between March 19 and March 23. Moreover, it's worth noting that over 120 police officers were also injured.
Local media reported that the Mayor was arrested alongside 99 others with links to the corruption inquiry, according to a statement shared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office
