ALBAWABA - The Syrian community was angered by the story of the young orphan girl, who was raped by three gunmen in the town of Salhab, near Hama province.
The story of Rawan Mahfouz, who lives in Salhab town in the western center of Syria, has driven much empathy from the Syrian people while also igniting fury over the absence of justice and increased human rights violations, especially against women, since the fall of the Assad regime last December.
Local sources told the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) that a horrific crime took place in the city of Salhab in the western Hama countryside, where three gunmen raped an orphan Alawite woman in her 20s in broad daylight while she was on her way to work.
According to the SOHR, the Syrian girl was heading from her village of Hawarat Amurin to her workplace at a factory in the city of Salhab.
Locals detailed that the gunmen got in her way, took off her clothes, and raped her before leaving her naked in a horrible situation on the street.
The residents in the area accused the rapists of being from the village of "Al-Asharna". However, no official source confirmed who were the rapists.
Social media activists from across Syria launched a campaign online calling for justice for Rawan and asking the Syrian government to punish the attackers.
Hashtags "Justice for Rawan" and "We are all Rawan" have been trending on Facebook as people decried this horrific crime against this orphan Syrian girl.
