ALBAWABA - The daughter of  Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was widely censured following a rare appearance recently at the wedding ceremony of Jordan's Princess Iman.

Aya el-Sisi attended the wedding along with her mother, Entissar. The younger el-Sisi was chastised for wearing the expensive necklace, which social media users said was worth $275,000 (8.5 million Egyptian pounds).

Posts on various social media platforms were specifically critical of el-Sisi's necklace, saying she had worn an expensive piece of jewelry, while her father had urged strict austerity measures to confront Egypt's worst economic crisis in recent memory.

Renowned Egyptian commentator Chayma Khaled, however, wrote in Mawqe Masr that social media posts "extremely inflated" the price of the necklace. She and other Egyptian news outlets pointed out that el-Sisi's daughter, although her family is wealthy and so are her in-laws, has a successful business and that she bought the necklace from her own money.

The Egyptian president's daughter was also rebuked for appearing on camera chewing gum at the televised Sunday wedding of the eldest daughter of Jordan's King Abdullah II.

A person tweeted: "chewing gum at a royal wedding is against protocols."
