ALBAWABA - The internet went crazy as they celebrated a video showing hundreds of gold bars and gold statues hidden inside a cave in Syria.
A clip has dominated social media platforms, allegedly taken in Syria's Daraa governorate, of an abandoned cave filled with a lost treasure consisting of hundreds of gold bullion pieces and huge statues made from gold.
In the clip, spider nets were seen covering the gold bars and statues, while a man was heard explaining that he found a cave filled with tombs, statues and gold inside a cave in Al-Harrah city in Daraa Governorate.
What's the truth behind finding a gold cave in Syria?
Verify Syria posted on Instagram denying the video that was shared on social media about finding a gold cave in Daraa city.
It said in a statement, "All the recently circulated footage and accompanying allegations about large quantities of gold being found inside one of the archaeological caves in the city of Al-Hara in Daraa Governorate are old footage and do not represent reality."
The platform added that local sources also confirmed to 'Verify Syria' that news alleging gold has been found inside any of the newly reopened cemeteries is false.
For its part, Al-Watan newspaper quoted eyewitnesses from the neighborhood as saying that "the concerned authorities have not found anything gold so far," noting that the area is considered archaeological in terms of its significance, and some local accounts indicate the possibility of the existence of the remains of an ancient city under the current town - but these hypotheses still need scientific confirmation through archaeological excavation.
