ALBAWABA - A video recently circulated on social media showing stray dogs near the Chernobyl area in Ukraine with completely blue fur, sparking speculation about radiation mutations and the nuclear disaster's impact on wildlife.
An organization that takes care of stray dogs in Ukraine's Chernobyl mentioned that three blue dogs were found during sterilization operations. Some people suggested that they "most likely, they’re getting into some sort of chemical."
Dogs of Chernobyl posted on its official Instagram account a video showing three blue dogs and outlined that the animals' fur had been normal just a week ago, and they appeared healthy and active. But, recently it turned blue color.
It wrote, "The town people were asking us why the dogs were blue? We do not know the reason, and we are attempting to catch them so we can find out what is happening. Most likely, they’re getting into some sort of chemical. They seem to be very active, and at this point, we have not been able to catch them."
On the other hand, experts confirmed that there is no evidence to suggest that the blue color is caused by radiation, and they warned against directly linking the phenomenon to the nuclear disaster.
The most scientific explanations suggest that the cause of the color change to blue may be due to the dogs' exposure to dyes or chemicals, or the absorption of dye from contaminated soil or water.
Genetic studies have also shown no direct link between radiation and the sudden change in fur color.
