The World Council of Churches, which represents around 400 million Christians, appealed Monday for the United States and Britain to call a swift halt to their strikes on Afghanistan.

The council "calls for a prompt end to the present action and urges other states not to join with them in it," it said in a statement issued in Geneva.

"We do not believe that war, particularly in today's highly technologized world, can ever be regarded as an effective response to the equally abhorrent sin of terrorism," it said.

"Nor do we believe that war can be described as an act of humanitarianism or that the practice of war can be legitimately linked to the promise of humanitarian assistance."

The council, grouping 342 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches around the world, issued its statement as the United States and Britain led a second night of strikes on targets in Afghanistan as part of what they describe as a war against terror -- GENEVA (AFP)
