The Egyptian Woman National Council discussed in its meeting Tuesday a bill regarding the citizenship for children born to an Egyptian mother married to a foreigner, the daily Al Ahram reported.

Present at the meeting were representatives from the ministries of interior and justice in addition to the director general of Passports, Immigration and Nationality Department and the council’s secretary Farkhandah Hassan.

Children living in Egypt with their Egyptian mothers, who in many cases are divorced or abandoned by their estranged fathers, are not allowed to become citizens, and so they are deprived of rights to free education and health insurance, for example.

The participants discussed the dimensions of the problem and the most suitable amendments to the law.

The participants decided also to form a small committee including members from the council and the two ministries to draft amendments to the bill -- Albawaba.com
