U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary, Paul Wolfowitz pledged Saturday to help US soldiers fighting Saddam Hussein's supporters get more funds to train Iraqis to assume a greater role in security.
"These young Iraqis are stepping forward to fight for
their country along with us," Wolfowitz told reporters at
a U.S. garrison here in Saddam's hometown. "It is a
wonderful success story that speaks volumes," The AP quoted him as saying.
Iraqi youth are being recruited in Tikrit region for the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps, mostly after being recommended by tribal sheiks. The recruits are trained by U.S. soldiers in a three-week program that includes basic military and civil defense skills. Wolfowitz inspected the trainees' classroom and spoke to some of the Iraqi trainees as they staged a battle drill practice. (Albawaba.com)
