ALBAWABA - Amidst ongoing support from the EU and the US for Israel's military operations in Gaza, the Spanish Minister of Social Rights has voiced a startling objection to the Netanyahu government.
In an unprecedented move, the Spanish minister has tabled a motion in Parliament, proposing that the sanctions applied to Russia should also be extended to Israel. This unexpected development has taken EU member states by surprise.
In a bold move, Minister Ione Belarra has called for an immediate cessation of Spain's relations with Israel and has urged the European Union to take action by imposing sanctions on Israel in response to its military actions in Gaza.
Belarra submitted her motion to Parliament, stating, "In our capacity as the Socialist Party, we have formally urged the government today through a parliamentary motion to condemn Israel's alleged plan for genocide against the Palestinian population. We firmly believe that, as the Spanish government, we should swiftly sever our diplomatic ties with Israel and actively advocate for EU-wide sanctions against Israel."
She raised concerns about Israel's actions in Gaza and insisted that all sanctions and embargoes imposed on Putin and Russia by the EU should equally apply to Netanyahu, the Israeli Defense Minister, and any government officials endorsing pressure on Palestine.
Minister Belarra didn't stop at the motion; she argued that once the Spanish government commits to this stance, it should be ratified across the EU. She asserted, "Israel's actions constitute a premeditated form of genocide. I want to emphasize that Israel's attacks on Palestinians, involving acts of mass violence, indiscriminate bombing, and interruptions to basic utilities like water and electricity, blatantly contravene international legal norms."
This proposal reflects a growing division within the EU and the global community concerning Israel's actions in the region, underlining the escalating tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict.
