ALBAWABA - Eluned Morgan is set to become Wales' next first minister and the country's first female leader after no other candidates ran for the Welsh Labour leadership.

Morgan is anticipated to be confirmed as Labour leader later this afternoon at a meeting of officials. She had the backing of nearly all Labour lawmakers in the Welsh Parliament.

Morgan will take over as leader of Welsh Labour from Vaughan Gething, who resigned last Tuesday in protest of four members of his administration.

Nominations ended at lunchtime on Wednesday, and a nearly two-month campaign was scheduled; however, Baroness Morgan was the only contender on the list.

The Senedd, or Welsh Parliament, must now vote on who will be the next First Minister. The Welsh Conservatives have requested for the Senedd to be recalled from summer holiday so that they can vote, as the schedule has been accelerated due to Baroness Morgan being the only candidate for Welsh Labour leader.
