Syria stands strongly behind Iraq in its struggle to regain its sovereignty, the Vice President told a visiting Iraqi delegation on Saturday.

Everyone wants "to permit the Iraqis to exercise their right to self-determination under the aegis of the United Nations," Abdul Halim Khaddam was quoted as saying in the media.

"We support the Iraqi people at the heart of Arab and international matters, because we consider the misfortune that befell Iraq as a test for the Arab nation," he said.

Khaddam added that all the Iraqi participants he has met "are unanimously working to end the (U.S.) occupation."

"Every Iraqi is determined to preserve the unity of the country and avoid internal conflicts," the Syrian Vice President added. (Albawaba.com)
