Iraq’s Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan said on Monday that there were no more prisoners held in his country, except two Arab nationals convicted of spying for the United States and Israel.
"There are no prisoners or detainees in Iraq, except two Arab citizens (jailed) because of spying for the United States and the Zionist entity," he told the state satellite channel, cited by AFP. Ramadan, however, did not provide further details with regards to their identities or nationalities.
In addition, he dismissed as "baseless" charges that Kuwaitis captured during Iraq's ‘90-‘91 occupation of their country remained in prison despite a recent amnesty declared by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
"Those who insist on saying that Kuwaiti detainees remained in Iraq are giving a pretext for the United States to attack the country," he made clear.
Kuwait's National Committee for Missing and POWs, for its part, has stated there were no Kuwaiti POWs amongst the thousands of released prisoners. (Albawaba.com)
