As the US-led bombing of Afghanistan rolls on, American radio broadcasts aimed into the war-torn country are warning refugees to stay away from unexploded cluster bombs with the distinctive shape of a can - unlike the square US food aid packages.
The safety warning, according to Reuters, is that airdropped food parcels are square, while unexploded cluster bombs are can-shaped, and both are yellow, "so it is important to tell them apart."
"In areas far from where we are dropping food, we are dropping cluster bombs," the radio spots say, according to a transcript obtained on Monday by the agency.
"Although it is unlikely, it is possible that not every bomb will explode on impact. These bombs are a yellow color and are can-shaped ..."
The Taliban militia has already denounced the US and its allies on several occasions for airstrikes they claim have killed numerous civilians. The UN has confirmed at least one of these incidents, involving a hospital in the city of Herat.
Transcripts of the US radio broadcasts released earlier by the Pentagon showed they were aimed at members of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, believed by Washington to be harboring Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda group, said Reuters.
Most US strikes over the weekend focused on the Taliban's forces in northern and northeast Afghanistan, around the cities of Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif, according to Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, cited by the CNN - Albawaba.com
