U.S. forces clashed with Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said Monday.
Gul, speaking to reporters before leaving for a visit to
Rome, confirmed news reports in Turkey that American forces fought rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, in
northern Iraq. "It is correct," Gul said. "There were clashes yesterday...Not only with the United States but also between (Iraqi Kurdish fighters) and the PKK. Some American helicopters were sent."
Ankara and Washington agreed in September on an "action plan" against an estimated 5,000 Turkish Kurdish rebels based in northern Iraq. (Albawaba.com)
