United States Secretary of State Colin Powell will hold talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York on Thursday, following the massive bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, UN officials said.

State Department officials said that Powell and Annan would discuss Iraq and Libya among other issues.

Powell was cutting into his vacation to attend the meeting, expected to start by 9:30 am (1330 GMT), State Department officials said.

US officials said Powell and Annan would be reviewing options for a new Security Council resolution that Washington wants to reinforce international support for troops now in Iraq as well as reconstruction efforts.

"We need to look at the attack on the UN as a new starting point to push ahead and not a point from where we start to retreat," AFP cited one official as saying. "We need to recapture the momentum." (Albawaba.com)
