The United States has asked Poland to send a contingent of troops to support anti-terrorist military operations in Afghanistan, Polish Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski said Thursday.
"The American government has made a request to us," Szmajdzinski said in an interview on public Polish Radio 1, without adding any what type of troops or how many had been requested.
The government may consider the request as soon Thursday during a regularly scheduled meeting, but the final decision on sending troops rests with President Aleksander Kwasniewski, the minister added.
Poland, a NATO member since 1999, has said repeatedly it will send troops if asked, and has already been sharing intelligence information with the United States.
Prime Minister Leszek Miller and Szmajdzinski were scheduled to visit later Thursday the special forces unit that is considered one of the more likely to be sent to Afghanistan – Warsaw (AFP)
