A loud explosion and anti-aircraft fire were heard over Kabul Tuesday as US aircraft flew several sorties over the Afghan capital for the third night in a row, an AFP reporter in the city said.

The jets initially made two passes, beginning at 9.20 p.m. (1650 GMT), and ground-to-air tracer fire lit up the night sky as Taliban anti-aircraft batteries opened up across the city.

"There was one large explosion and a number of aircraft, but they sounded very high," the AFP reporter said.

The focus of the attack appeared to be the airport to the north of the city.

"There was a brief lull after the first wave and then the jets returned. But there were no more big explosions."

The planes returned in the early hours of Wednesday morning, triggering another barrage of anti-aircraft fire.

"We heard the planes coming in again around 1.20am and the Taliban guns started firing immediately," the reporter said.

"There were no sounds of any bombs or missiles falling," he added.

Electricity was cut in the Afghan capital shortly after nightfall, in what has become a regular precursor of the daily aerial strikes -- KABUL (AFP)
