US officials in Yemen investigating the bombing of the destroyer USS Cole moved their operation Sunday from the port of Aden to the capital, Sanaa.

A State Department spokesman said the move had been considered "for some weeks now" and was not in response to increased security concerns in the Middle East, according to a statement of which Albawaba.com has an e-mail copy.

Investigators had been working out of a hotel in Aden since the October 2000 bombing of the Cole in the city harbor.

The statement said the people involved included State Department officials, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents and members of the Marine Forces.

Seventeen US sailors were killed last October when an explosives-laden light boat blew up at the USS Cole's side in Aden harbor.

The investigation has been proceeding amid heightened security measures due to concerns about terrorism – Albawaba.com
