ALBAWABA - A U.S. AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed on Monday near the Strait of Hormuz, and a rescue team safely extracted its crew, informed sources told The New York Times on Tuesday.

The American newspaper reported that it was unclear whether the helicopter was shot down by Iranian fire, suffered a technical malfunction, or encountered some other problem.

The cause of the crash and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, according to the newspaper.

Reuters reported that it was not immediately clear whether the Apache was shot down by the Iranian army or whether the U.S. helicopter faced a mechanical error.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump said regarding the crash, "The pilots are fine," as he spoke on the runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport before returning to Washington, D.C.

The president continued, "Nobody injured."
