A U.S. warplane bombed U.S. special forces and Kurdish civilians in a convoy on Sunday, killing at least 10 to 12 of them in a "friendly fire" incident in northern Iraq, said a BBC correspondent who witnessed the event.

The reporter told the television: "I have counted 10 to 12 bodies...Americans dead." "They hit their own people... they've killed a lot of ordinary characters, I'm just looking at the bodies now and it's not a very pretty sight," the reporter added.

He said a senior Kurdish political figure was believed to be among the wounded. He said a U.S. plane dropped the bomb 10 to 12 feet from where he was standing.

Meanwhile, a destroyed U.S. tank was seen on a main highway leading south out of Baghdad on Sunday and Iraqi officers said four U.S. soldiers had died in the tank. Journalists were taken by Iraqi officials to the site of what they said was a battle on Saturday about 25 km from the city center, on the highway to Mahmoudiya south of Baghdad.

"Yesterday morning, eight U.S. tanks tried to enter Baghdad coming from the direction of Mahmoudiya and we confronted them and we destroyed all of them, killing four U.S. soldiers," Iraqi Brigadier Mohammed Jasim told journalists.

Dozens of Iraqi civilians crowded around the journalists and the tank, shouting anti-American slogans such as "Down, down Bush" and "Long live Saddam Hussein".

Iraqi officers said the other seven U.S. tanks had also been burned and taken away from the battlefield. (Albawaba.com)
