American warplanes bombed the city of Samarrah early Saturday. Iraqi hospital officials said several people died, while the U.S. military said 50 were killed.
The U.S. military said several bombs were dropped on "known enemy locations" near the city, about 100 kilometers north of Baghdad.
The US Army said about 50 "militants" were killed in the operation, dubbed Cajun Mousetrap III. Residents said the bombing destroyed two houses, but the people who lived in them were not there.
About nine Iraqis were killed and some 40 wounded in the fighting, said Jamal al-Qeilani of Samarrah General Hospital, The AP reported. (albawaba.com)
