A UN official announced Wednesday that a regiment of Iranian peacekeeping forces would soon be dispatched for

relief-related missions, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA.

The supervisor of a UN peacekeeping mission delegation currently in Tehran, Col. Annete Lee Jenner, assessed the “discipline and preparedness of the regiment" as qualities gained due to fighting a long war, said IRNA.

Jenner said the UN needed skilled soldiers to bring peace to parts of the world torn by conflict.

An Iranian army officer said that the regiment would be engaged in peacekeeping missions, buffer protection between warring parties, supervision and control of conflicting sides and serving as intermediaries between adversaries.

He also said the participation of the regiment as part of UN peacekeeping missions would be a great achievement for Iran.

The US considers Iran to be a sponsor of terrorism, and has made strenuous efforts to isolate the Islamic republic. Other nations, notably those of the European Union, have been less comfortable with this strategy and have even defied US bans on investing in Iran's oil industry – Albawaba.com
