The United Arab Emirates (UAE) offered Wednesday an initial donation of three million dollars in support of a fund for helping Afghan people, reported the Emirati official news agency (WAM).
UAE Foreign Minister Rashid Abdullah announced the donation in Doha where he is attending the extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The fund was proposed by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar and current chairman of OIC.
The Emir announced that his country would support the fund with $10m, as the conference voiced concern for the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan amid continued US strikes against the ruling Taliban ruling militia.
UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has ordered the UAE Red Crescent Society to rush relief supplies worth Dh 15 million to Afghan refugees, and First Lady Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the UAE Women's Federation, has offered Dh 5 million, according to the agency.
