The Abu Dhabi-based Zayed Institute for Research and Technology will launch its first scientific program in September, with aim of detecting cancer at the earliest possible stage, the institute announced Sunday.
The program is a revolutionary system developed in partnership with HTTP Technology which can detect cancer at a much earlier stage than the current technique of doctors simply looking at a medical scan, said a statement, cited by the Gulf News.
It will be launched simultaneously in major UAE hospitals and London's Royal Marsden and Cromwell hospitals.
The computer system was developed by a founder member of the institute, Sabbir Rahman.
The Medicsight software analyses computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans of the lungs and detects suspected cancerous nodules.
The system will be tested in UAE hospitals under the supervision of Prof. Farhan Bakir.
Stefen Allesch-Taylor, the director general designate of the institute, introduced Bakir.
"He has joined the Zayed Institute team to assist in the preparation for the imminent testing of the technology prior to its deployment in the UAE."
The institute statement said, "The research programs by the institute are being carried out as a symbol of the devotion of the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to new scientific developments, and his keen interest in using these new inventions to provide comprehensive health care services for the people of the UAE." – Albawaba.com
