The United Arab of Emirates (UAE) has expressed its full support for the creation of the Arab Womens Organization (AWO), which is taking place in Cairo, as a practical translation of Arab women's aspirations.

The UAE’s stand came during the opening session of the extraordinary conference of the Arab Womens Summit, when the gathering proposed to set up a body to take care of women's issues, the UAE’s official news agency (WAM) reported.

''We are eager to see the organization coming into being so as to carry out its great responsibilities,'' Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, wife of the president and chairwoman of the UAE Womens Federation, said.

Fatima addressed the gathering at the opening session of the summit with the “remarkable achievements of the Emirati women in all walks of life.”

Meanwhile, she said that the federation would host the women and media forum February 2-3, 2002.

Sheikha Fatima reiterated the need for Arab solidarity with the Palestinian women and people in their struggle to recover their rights to freedom, peace and establishment of their independent state with its capital Jerusalem. She also called on Arab women organizations to redouble their efforts to reflect the plight of Palestinian women at the hands of Israel.

The summit is due to end Monday with the creation of the Arab Womens Organization, which will be under the umbrella of the Cairo-based Arab League but enjoy an independent financial and administrative status.

The organization will have the task of coordinating the views of Arab women at international forums and of exchanging expertise on questions related to the condition of Arab women - Albawaba.com
