Two Jordanians were apprehended by Israeli authorities after the pair crossed the border into Israel late Wednesday night near a strip of hotels in the Red Sea port of Eilat, said Haaretz newspaper on Thursday.
According to military sources, the “infiltrators had no intention of carrying out a terror attack.”
“Around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, IDF forces spotted two men crossing the border with Jordan about a kilometer north of the coast of Eilat. Forces in the area went onto high alert and a chase began as the two men headed for one of the hotels,” an Israeli statement said, cited by the paper.
The hotel was evacuated and large numbers of soldiers and police cordoned off the tourist area of Eilat.
Israeli soldiers, along with police, trapped the two near the northern end of the Eilat coastline.
The two told their interrogators that they had crossed the border into Israel because they wanted to visit family members, but another possibility was that they crossed into Israel in search of work, said the paper – Albawaba.com
