Two foreigners said to be British civilians were killed in an attack in Mosul on Sunday, according to witnesses.
They claimed that the bodies of two men, apparently with bullet wounds, were lying in the street alongside their burned-out vehicle nearly an hour following the attack, which took place in an eastern part of the city.
"These were British civilians working at the Mosul East power station," an Iraqi technician, requesting anonymity, said.
"They were on their way to the power station in two cars when they came under fire from attackers with AK-47s. One vehicle was hit," he was cited by Reuters as saying.
Meanwhile, witnesses said three other foreigners, also apparently British nationals, had reached the power station after the shooting.
Elsewhere, a bomb exploded Sunday outside a police officer's home in a city northeast of Baghdad, injuring five bystanders, including two children, according to authorities.
The explosion in a residential area of Baqouba wounded an eight-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister, police Capt. Mohammed Hadi said. The police officer who was the target of the attack was inside the house but was unharmed.
In the meantime, in Kirkuk, a bomb exploded at an intersection where police cars park. Three civilians were injured, police Col. Dashti Aziz said. As bystanders gathered after the blast, gunmen opened fire from a passing car, but there were no casualties. Police said the shooters were later arrested.
On Saturday, missiles smuggled in via a cart of second-hand clothing slammed into the local government headquarters in Mosul, killing at least two people and wounding 19 others. However, other reports said four Iraqis were killed in the attack.
The attack was part of another day of violence across Iraq, in which two Iraqi civilians working for the US-led occupation forces were also slain.
Police said attackers in Mosul launched two Katyusha missiles from a busy marketplace, apparently aiming at the office of the local governor. Two policemen were among the wounded.
"I cannot see why they are targeting civilians. Does it make them feel good when they see a child suffering?" said Lieutenant Colonel Shamil Ahmad of the Mosul police. He said police could not fire at the attackers because the area was crowded. (Albawaba.com)
