Two American soldiers die as 40 Iraqis killed in Hilla

Two American soldiers were killed in separate incidents in Iraq, the military said Saturday.  

 

According to The AP, a Marine was killed in action while another died from wounds received during fighting in Anbar province, while "conducting security and stability operations," the military statement said. Both were killed on Friday.  

 

In Hilla, south of Baghdad, Iraqi police backed by Polish troops clashed with Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr's loyalists, leaving 40 Shiite fighter dead, the city's police chief said. 

 

Late Friday, 20 Polish soldiers were encircled at their base by several hundred Shiite fighters, a spokesman for the army chief of staff said in Warsaw. 

 

They were at Hilla, about five kilometers from their main base at Babylon, according to the spokesman, Colonel Zdzislaw Gnatowski. (albawaba.com)
