Turkey's Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit announced Monday he would not be attending official functions for a couple of days so he could recover properly from an intestinal infection.

"My health is getting better day by day but I prefer to work from home for another two to three days," the 77-year-old premier said.

A severe intestinal infection led to Ecevit being hospitalized on May 4 and 5.

On Friday, he brushed aside new calls for him to retire and insisted he was in good health, according to AFP

His health has been a major concern in Turkey in recent years due to his advanced age and his public gaffes, which have led to doubts as to whether he is fit to run the country.

Furthermore, there are fears of the economic repercussions of his eventual death at a time when the country is battling its worst recession in decades.

Ecevit has been receiving treatment since June last year for myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease characterized by varying degrees of muscle weakness. (Albawaba.com)
