Turkish naval forces on Tuesday plucked a survivor from stormy seas around a stricken Georgian cargo ship, more than 30 hours after the vessel packed with illegal immigrants crashed into a reef, local media reported.
The NTV news channel showed images of the exhausted survivor, a young man of South Asian appearance, being brought to a beach near the Mediterranean resort of Kemer in a boat after being spotted by a rescue helicopter.
The man had been spotted swimming in high seas, some one kilometer from the bay where the Georgian-registered cargo ship hit rocks and broke into two early on Monday, the Anatolia news agency reported.
A mutilated body, that of a woman, was found earlier Tuesday on another beach in the same vicinity, bringing to seven the number of bodies found since the disaster.
The ship, which should have been carrying only a crew of 10, was also transporting an estimated 80 illegal immigrants from India and Pakistan.
It suffered an engine failure in stormy weather and then broke in two after hitting rocks shortly after leaving the Turkish Mediterranean port of Antalya.
So far around 33 people have been rescued, according to officials and local media -- ANKARA (AFP)
