Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will remain in hospital for up to a week, a hospital spokesman said on Thursday, appearing to dash hopes he might join a European Union (EU) summit in Copenhagen amid efforts to unite the divided island.
The spokesman told reporters Denktash, who flew to Turkey on Thursday for a check up, would remain under observation for a "few minor complaints" before returning to Cyprus, SPA news agency reported.
EU officials have held out hope that Denktash or a representative would sign some form of agreement at the Copenhagen summit committing themselves to the principles of a United Nations-sponsored plan to reunite the island after 28 years of partition. (Albawaba.com)
