President Zein El Abideen bin Ali on Tuesday granted amnesty to a number of prisoners to mark the 44th anniversary of Tunisia’s independence, reported the local press.

Some of the unspecified number of prisoners who have been granted amnesty will be completely pardoned, while others will have their sentences reduced.

The decision came at a meeting Monday night between the president and the ministers of justice and interior, Al Bashir Al Takari and Abdullah Kaabi, respectively.

Those pardoned, the president was quoted as saying, must have the chance to live a normal life after they have been professionally rehabilitated during their imprisonment – Albawaba.com
