Foued Mebazaâ, 71, has been reelected President of the Tunisian Parliament according to TAP, the Tunisian Press Agency.

Mebazaa has held the post uninterrupted since October 1997. Considered close to the President Ben Ali, he called on deputies to be loyal to the government and to work together in a time of instability and insecurity.

There are 189 members of the legislature. Most belong to the official government party, the RCD, but five opposition parties share 37 Parliamentary seats.

According to the Moroccan constitution, as of next year a new second chamber is due to be instituted.
