ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump has urged the United Kingdom to halt imports of Norwegian oil and instead expand domestic production in the North Sea, criticizing London for what he described as paying “double the price” for foreign energy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called on Britain to “start drilling its own” resources, arguing that the country is sitting on vast untapped reserves while Europe faces mounting energy pressure.
The remarks come amid rising tensions between Washington and London following British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision not to join a U.S.-led naval blockade targeting Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz.
Starmer warned the move could further drive up energy prices and said the UK is prioritizing diplomatic and security efforts to reopen the waterway without escalation.
The dispute unfolds at a sensitive moment for global energy markets. The U.S.-imposed blockade, introduced after the collapse of ceasefire talks, has already pushed Brent crude above $104 per barrel, tightening supply and amplifying volatility. Trump’s comments reflect an effort to shift the burden of rising energy costs onto European allies while reinforcing his “America First” energy strategy.
British officials have yet to respond directly, but the exchange highlights a growing divergence in policy. While London continues to back Ukraine and pursue multilateral diplomacy on Iran, Washington has adopted a more unilateral and confrontational approach.
