In Algeria, rescue workers on Monday pulled out the dead body of Sabrina Belmoumene from the rubble of a building crushed in last week's devastating earthquake, ending three days of immense efforts to rescue the 11-year-old.
Emergency crews first heard Belmoumene's cries for help on Friday as they searched the debris of a four-story building east of Algiers that caved in during the quake which hit the region two days earlier.
“Save me, I'm Sabrina," she could be heard saying from underneath the rubbles.
Family members and neighbors, aided by Algerian and Italian firefighters, tried to free Sabrina from the concrete and bricks trapping her. Until late Sunday night, Sabrina responded to repeated calls from her rescuers to assure them she was still alive, according to AFP.
However, unfortunately, early Monday morning her calls stopped. An already dangerously fragile pillar in the building had given way and collapsed on top of her. (Albawaba.com)
