Trade exchange between Syrian and Iran will reach $200 million in 2001, said Iran's Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ali Abdolali-Zadeh on Wednesday.

His remarks came at the end of his visit to Syria, where he co-chaired a joint meeting with Syrian officials on ways to enhance bilateral trade, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

“Iran's exports to Syria until March, 2001 stood at

$150 million,” he said, adding that there had been a five-fold increase in the level of trade transactions between Iran and Syria in recent years.

The minister further noted that one year ago, the two sides started talks on cooperation in the electronics sector. Iran's proposal to set up a joint company in the field of electronics had been accepted by the Syrian side, he said.

"In order to begin the cooperation process and expand economic ties, the Export Promotion Bank of Iran will extend a credit of 40 million in the form of financial facilities to Syrian businesspersons and industrialists."

Abdolali-Zadeh, who is also the Iranian head of the Iran-Syria Joint Economic Commission, arrived in Syria on Sunday to participate in the fifth meeting of the body – Albawaba.com
