Tunisia will host the Arab summit in May, following a preparatory meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo, a top Arab diplomat said, in a seeming compromise over bickering on the venue of the meeting.

"There is an Arab consensus to hold the summit in Tunis," the source told AFP, on condition of anonymity, adding that it would probably convene in the first half of next month.

Foreign ministers will prepare the agenda of the conference at Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital.

Tunisia took the unprecedented decision of postponing the summit last week after Arab foreign ministers failed to agree on proposals that Tunis deemed essential for political reform in the Middle East.

Tunisia, as rotating president of the Arab League, has insisted on its right to hold the summit, which Egypt has also offered to host. (Albawaba.com)
